Creative Offensive Weapons
Step-Through Up-and-Unders
NBA 2K27 adds step-through up-and-under moves inspired by stars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić, and Donovan Mitchell.
Whether driving, posting up, or sizing up a defender on the perimeter, you can perform a pump fake and immediately push the Pro Stick in one of five directions to trigger a corresponding step-through layup or jumper.
Expanded Dribbling Customization
Signature dribbling packages are now broken into individual movements, allowing you to mix and match animations from different players. For example, you can combine Stephen Curry’s behind-the-back slide with Trae Young’s escape cross.

Dynamic Layup Engine
The new Dynamic Layup Engine makes rim finishes more dynamic, with animations adapting to the player’s movement, finishing ability, and defensive pressure.
High-rated finishers can adjust their shooting hand in mid-air when an elite rim protector contests the attempt, helping them move the ball away from the defender. The system also reduces situations where the ball clips the bottom of the rim or backboard.
Advanced Layups
Advanced gathers and finishes, including hop-steps, Euro Steps, and spins, are now separated instead of being locked into preset animations.
The game uses real-time logic to combine gathers and finishes based on the matchup and situation. A weak defender can be beaten cleanly, while an elite defender can disrupt the same move.
Logic-Driven Dunk Meter
Every dunk attempt must now be manually timed using the Dunk Meter.
The meter dynamically evaluates defensive positioning from takeoff through the finish. If you beat your defender and have an open lane, the green window expands. If a help defender makes a late closeout and meets you at the apex, the window can immediately tighten.
This creates more realistic outcomes and places greater emphasis on timing and defensive reads.
Advanced Controls
NBA 2K27 introduces new Advanced Controls designed to give players more precise control over playmaking and signature moves.
Moving Breakdowns
Hold the right trigger and flick UP on the Pro Stick while driving to initiate a player’s signature breakdown combo without stopping forward momentum.
No-Look Passes
New no-look passing controls give playmakers another way to disguise their passing intentions and create opportunities for teammates.
Intuitive Alley-Oops
Alley-oops also receive control improvements designed to make throwing them more intuitive and responsive.
Upgraded Rhythm Shooting
Rhythm Shooting returns as a key way to replicate a traditional shooting motion with the Pro Stick.
The Shot Meter now features a real-time visual tick mark that moves in sync with your physical Pro Stick movement. Matching the ideal Tempo expands the Timing green window, while rushing or dragging the stick shrinks it.
Based on community feedback, Rhythm Shooting now requires players to green the Timing to successfully make a shot.
Reworked Shot Feedback provides additional information, including whether your Timing was early or late and whether your Tempo was too fast or too slow.
Rhythm Shooting has also been expanded to free throws.
Reworked, Physical Defense
Defense has been redesigned to provide more physical and skill-based answers to explosive offensive moves.
Hands-Up Defense & Shot Contests
Holding UP on the Pro Stick activates aggressive hands-up defense. The defender automatically contests shots while maintaining verticality against contact layups or providing a slight jump contest against jump shots.
Holding DOWN on the right stick activates conservative hands-up defense, allowing defenders to stay planted and contest while reducing the risk of fouling.
The Block button remains the primary tool for aggressive rejections, with timing and anticipation heavily rewarded.
AI defenders also benefit from the improved hands-up system and are better equipped to contest shots. They will also hold their position more effectively against triple-threat stepovers.
Advanced Contest Feedback
Shot contests now use an eight-tier, color-coded system to make defensive impact easier to understand.
The new Defensive Impact Indicator appears beneath the shooter whenever a defender contributes to a contest. A weak, late contest produces a small white arc, while an elite contest can produce a large crimson arc.
Skill-Based Ankle Breakers
Ankle breakers are no longer primarily chance-based. NBA 2K27 uses a defender’s real-time momentum to determine whether they react correctly to sudden changes of direction.
A hard crossover against a defender moving in the wrong direction can dramatically increase the likelihood of an ankle breaker. Defensive ratings also determine how closely a defender needs to mirror the ball-handler and how quickly they can recover after guessing incorrectly.
Defensive Cutoffs
The expanded defensive cutoff system gives defenders another way to counter explosive lateral dribble moves and escape combos.
- Flick the Right Stick: Perform a quick one-step cutoff.
- Hold R2/RT + Flick the Right Stick: Perform a larger lunging cutoff.
Speed and Agility ratings influence these movements. Successfully forcing a body-up collision can drain the ball-handler’s Adrenaline and potentially cause a fumble or picked-up dribble.
New Collision System
A new collision system improves steals and ball security, rewarding disciplined positioning and physical defense.
Upgraded steal targeting reduces awkward reaches, while larger defenders with low Steal ratings can no longer rely as heavily on cheap bump steals.
Ball-handlers can also lose control of the ball and recover it, creating more realistic interactions in traffic.
Revamped Takeover System
NBA 2K27 completely revamps Takeover around five disciplines:
- Shooting
- Finishing
- Playmaking
- Defense
- Rebounding
Each discipline has its own meter that rises and falls throughout the game based on your performance.
The six levels are:
- Frozen
- Cold
- Neutral
- Warm
- Hot
- Takeover
You can become hot in multiple categories simultaneously. For example, a player could be generating ankle breakers, creating assists, and scoring in the paint while having multiple Takeover abilities active.
When a discipline reaches maximum level, its equipped Takeover Ability activates automatically. Each ability has its own duration, with an on-screen timer showing how long it remains active.

- Shot Artist: Enhances off-dribble shooting.
- Calibrated: Enhances set-shot shooting.
- Zip Code: Extends the ability to make deep shots.
- Default: Provides a considerable Shooting attribute boost.
Finishing
- Inside Touch: Enhances standing layups.
- Navigator: Enhances driving and advanced layups, including euros, hops, and spins.
- Detonator: Enhances standing dunks.
- Airspace: Enhances driving dunks.
- Paint Surgeon: Enhances post hooks, fades, and post matchups.
- Default: Provides a considerable Finishing attribute boost.
Playmaking
- Blur: Improves the ability to blow by defenders and win body-up matchups.
- Cook: Increases the chances of successful ankle breakers.
- Dishmaster: Boosts the recipient’s Finishing and Shooting attributes.

Defense
- Glue: Enhances the ability to force ball pickups and fumbles.
- Hawk: Activates on-ball steal attempts capable of causing turnovers or fumbles.

Rebounding
- Demolition: Improves strong screen setting.
- Muscle: Improves boxouts and rebounding.

Universal
- Hydration Hero: Temporarily prevents the loss of Adrenaline and Energy/Turbo and can be equipped in any of the five discipline slots.
AI & Coaching
NBA 2K27 introduces major improvements to AI logic, giving computer-controlled players a stronger understanding of offensive and defensive situations.
Transition & Early Offense
AI teams now prioritize early offense instead of always waiting to establish a traditional half-court set.
Players immediately organize into spacing lanes after made baskets. Both the inbounder and ball-handler sprint up the floor, while open rim runners can become immediate targets.
High-tempo teams will continue probing the defense instead of automatically stopping when transition numbers are even. Some teams may attack with as much as 17 seconds remaining on the shot clock.
Set AI
Set AI is a new framework designed to make superstar players the true hubs of their team’s offense.
Instead of simply calling random plays, the AI coordinates specific actions and positions around key players such as Nikola Jokić.
Scorers can move into different positions and roles depending on the team and situation. Sets can also change based on game context, including the beginning or end of quarters, close games, and scoring slumps.
Play Art & Team Communication
New play art provides more information about what AI teammates are doing. Notifications above players can indicate actions such as cutting, posting up, having a mismatch, or being open.
Team Gameplans
NBA 2K27 introduces team-level offensive gameplans. The AI tracks efficiency in real time and can shift toward aggressive, star-focused strategies when appropriate.
Teams can also change their approach if the defense shuts down their initial strategy and can identify favorable matchups to exploit.
Pick-and-Roll Execution
The AI receives major improvements to pick-and-roll and handoff execution.
ProPLAY® helps power more authentic pitch passes, while improved pocket passing creates better angles and smarter alley-oop opportunities.
Elite ball-handlers can actively hunt for perimeter isolations and post mismatches. When a player enters hunt behavior, the AI can repeatedly target a preferred matchup through screens, isolation plays, and freelance spacing.
Enhanced Matchup Switching
Defensive AI now makes more complex decisions instead of simply rotating to predetermined spots.
Defenders evaluate matchups and help targets while adjusting their off-ball pressure as players move around the floor. The new rotation engine also improves spatial awareness and passing-lane defense.
The number of recognizable defender types has been doubled, allowing the AI to consider attributes, tendencies, and badges when determining the best defensive matchup or switch.
The Buzzer Beater
NBA 2K27’s gameplay overhaul focuses on balance, versatility, and skill-based outcomes across every possession.

How do I throw a no-look pass in NBA 2K27?
To throw a no-look pass, hold R1/RB and flick the Pro Stick directly toward your intended target. The passer will dynamically look away from the target using head-tracking technology to sell the misdirection. Your player’s Pass Accuracy rating still determines the success rate of the pass.
